Assistant professor in Data Mining

The Department of Intelligent Systems and Digital Design (ISDD) at Halmstad University is seeking to appoint a full-time Assistant professor in Information technology with focus on data mining and machine learning.

Appointment as Assistant Professor is a qualifying appointment with the purpose to give the employee a possibility to promote to Associate Professor. Appointment as Assistant Professor is for four years.

The ISDD Department, has for a long time had a strong scientific output in AI, digital service innovation, data mining and machine learning, as well as excellent (and practical) results from its education programs involving intelligent systems. Its main focus is on aware intelligent systems that can be self-monitoring, can fuse heterogeneous information, and can communicate with humans and be aware of their intentions. The University has established a strong network of public sector and industry relationships, in which Alfa Laval AB is an important industrial partner. This recruitment is tightly connected to existing collaboration efforts between Halmstad University and Alfa Laval AB.

Work assignments

Self-monitoring of complex systems is regarded as an important task as it reduces costs and improves the reliability of such systems. Still, today the majority of diagnostic functions are created by human experts in a time-consuming and expensive process. One typical system delivered by Alfa Laval AB consists of multiple, partially similar separators (centrifuge machines that employ a high rotational speed to separate components of different densities) whose operation produces multivariate streaming data that is continuously collected but currently under-utilized. The candidate will work in close collaboration with Alfa Laval AB (in Stockholm-Tumba and Copenhagen) on developing data mining methods and algorithms to analyse such data and produce tools for fault detection. This can be achieved by comparing the operation of each machine against its own past behaviour and against a group of similar machines in order to identify faults and anomalies. In addition, the candidate will investigate how information extracted from the data can be combined with expert knowledge by interacting with domain experts, taking advantage of available a priori knowledge, explaining and justifying the solutions given, as well as accepting feedback and incorporating it into further processing.

The candidate will perform this research in close collaboration with our industrial partner, by spending, for example, one week every three weeks (about 35% of the working time) at Alfa Laval AB.

The applicant must hold a doctoral degree in Artificial Intelligence/Data Mining/Machine Learning/Information Technology or closely related fields. The applicant must demonstrate a strong, currently active research profile in the above fields. The overall scientific production should be extensive in high-quality research journals. Documented experience from innovation, research and development in an industrial environment is also a strong merit. An Assistant Professor position requires that the doctoral degree was awarded within five years of the application deadline

Assessment criteria:

For appointment as a Assistant Professor, the following assessment criteria will be applied:

- Ability to conduct research of high international quality in data mining
- Documented experience from research in collaboration with industrial partners
- Ability to conduct high-quality teaching and to develop courses at different levels
- Experience in supervision of master/PhD students
- Ability to attract external funding

Dynamism, curiosity and willingness to conduct evaluation of the digital transformation at Alfa Laval to enable new perspectives of how to address opportunities and challenges with AI, machine learning and data mining.

Salary is to be settled by negotiation. The application should include a stetment of the salary level.

Applications should be sent via Halmstad University's recruitment system Varbi (see link on this page). The application package shall consist of:

1) a cover letter stating the purpose of the application and a brief statement of why you believe that your goals are well-matched with the goals of this position, together with a description of future research plans.

2) an attested CV that includes at least

- a list of previous degrees, dates, and institution, transcripts for higher-education studies until most recent available
- a complete list of publications and a description of previous research and other work experience and links to online copies of the most important publications

3) contact information for at least three references.

General Information:

We value the qualities that gender balance and diversity bring to our organization. We therefore welcome applicants with different backgrounds, gender, functionality and, not least, life experience.
